Management Development Programme on "Leveraging the Best Management Practices to enhance the efficacy"

A One day Management Development program was conducted at MBA@GIT on the topic 'LEVERAGING THE BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO ENHANCE THE EFFICACY OF SUGAR MILLS' on 3rd October 2009 with the objectives of creating awareness. The day took off with a brief introduction of MDP and purpose behind it by the compearers. Mr. Madhusudan invoked the almighty with a melodious invocation song. Dignitaries present on the dais were: - Shri. M. Prabhu, Shri. U. N. Kalkundrikar, Dr. Khandgave, Dr. M. D. Kulkarni, Dr. M. M. Munshi. Dr. M. D. Kulkarni Principal GIT Welcomed the guests and briefed about how KLS has made its own mark in this part of Karnataka. Dr. M. M. Munshi, HOD MBA introduced the dignitaries in the dais and emphasized the importance of such programs in MBA Program and exemplified that event management is a crucial aspect to be imbibed for MBA professionals. Lightening of the lamp: the dignitaries on the dais and distinguished guests lighted the lamp.

Shri. M. Prabhu, Chief Guest of the function addressed the audience and expressed his happiness on getting associated with KLS. He briefed about the past and present scenario of sugar industries and said there is a lot of room for improvement in the sugar arena and explained the reasons for downfall of sugar industries of late.

He further stressed that volatility, low recovery of sugar from sugar cane is adding to misery of sugar mills and quoted a few more causes which are aggravating the bottlenecks. He said sugar mills have non-uniform flow of raw materials, small land-holdings.

He also insisted the importance of continuous upgrading of skills and appreciated GIT for organizing and conducting MDP of this kind.

Shri. U. N. Kalkundrikar addressed the audience with his presidential remarks. He shared his first hand experience of sugarcane cultivation and said he finds a sheer pleasure of being a farmer. Shri. U. N. Kalkundrikar expressed that problems are obvious no matter the farmer is ready to spend money to combat them and said it is not quite possible to solve all the problems as theoretical approaches just don't work. He said sub-division and fragmentation are the evils that are hampering the prosperity of agriculture, inhibiting the farmers from adopting mechanized farming and also said these days production of sugar alone is no more viable hence, production of bi-products like and ethanol and electricity is inevitable.

Dr. R. B. Khangave was the resource person for the 1st technical session on "Scientific methods of procurement hazards and remedies". In his session Dr. Khandgave spoke on latest scientific procurement techniques and methods of eliminating wasteful activities. His rich and versatile experience was extremely resourceful to the participants. The session was co-ordinated by Prof. S. N. Khanai and Prof. Govindraj R Mane.

Shri D. S. Gurav was the resource person for 2rd technical session. He spoke on 'Economic viability in the present economic context'. He said that sugarcane industries cannot afford to survive merely on sugar production. He said that multitasking and diversification are the key essentials for any sugar mill. He also stressed on various mechanized measures to reduce the cost of production. The session was co-ordinated by Prof. Prasad Kulkarni, Prof. Jyoti Talreja and Prof. Nupur Veshne.

Dr. A. M. Gurav in the 3nd session of MDP spoke on the 'Significance of HR in the contemporary sugar mills'. He highlighted the dearth of skilled labour, he suggested ways and means to retain talent and combat attrition rate. He emphasized the role of HR in the upliftment of an organization. The session was co-ordinated by Prof. P. M. Kulkarni and Prof. Sanjay Deshpande.

The sessions were very interactive and fruitful, 25 executives from sugar mills in Karnataka and Maharashtra participated in the program. Narrating their feedback at the MDP they expressed satisfaction over the program.
