About the Department
In view of growing need for highly skilled IT professional, the department of Information Science & Engg. Was introduced by our esteemed KLS management, in the year 2000 with a modest intake of 60 students and staff strength of four. Ever since its inception, the department has registered tremendous growth under the guidance of Ex-HOD Prof. M. M. Math. The department is well equipped with state of the art laboratory facilities & supported by highly qualified and dedicated staff. The present staff strength is 14 including one professor and five Asst.Professors lead by Prof.Mrs.V. R. Kulkarni as the Head of the department.
The faculty is actively involved in Curriculum development, Consultancy and Research activities. Four faculty members have already registered for Ph.D. at various Universities in the key areas of Information Science and Engineering. The department has tied up with the Belgaum IT group for training our students in the latest technological advancements in the field of IT. The department has three digital class rooms equipped with LCDs, LAPTOPs and Ceramic Boards for the conduct of regular classes and also for the guest lectures. The department library has about 600 books and caters to the Academic needs of the students of our department. The department is recognized by Karnataka State Open University as the Study Center for pursuing M.Sc.(IT) and M.Tech.(IT) courses. The department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation(NBA) and is permanently affiliated for period of 5 years to VTU. The department has also been recognized by the Karnataka government to oversee the progress of their flagship IT program named “Mahiti Sindhu” for the high-school students.
Role of Information Science and Engineering in IT
Information Science and Engineering deals with the issues of extracting information and building knowledge for Management Information Systems, Mining the statistical data of Business Enterprises using the advanced data mining techniques to arrive at meaningful conclusions and predict future trends. It also deals with fundamental aspects of Computer Science and Engineering such as Software Engineering, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Operations Research, Computer Networks etc. Recently, the curriculum is modified to include the recent trends in information storage and management, information security and distributed computing. The subjects Storage Area Networks, Information and Security and Grid Computing cover these advanced topics in Information Technology. It is therefore beneficial for an aspiring engineer to opt for engineering in Information Science and Engineering as it not only covers the fundamental aspects of Computer Science and Engineering, but also gives him/her an opportunity to arm himself/herself with the advanced topics in Information and Knowledge Management and prepare him/her for the Knowledge era of 21st Century.
Innovative Practices
At our department we use innovative techniques like presentation of lectures through power point slides, animation and learner centric approaches to impart knowledge. The faculty makes every attempt to encourage the students to learn and assimilate in the true spirit of an engineer. The classes are regularly conducted, the progress is monitored and the parents are informed of their ward’s progress. We conduct parent interaction meet every semester to know the student’s personal problems and help students to overcome them. The weak students are paid special attention by conducting extra lectures to help improve their subject knowledge and provide important tips on how to write exams, so that they can face the exams with confidence. From this year, we have offered the students to take up Mini-projects, an activity beyond the syllabus prescribed by VTU to make them learn the practical aspects of Project development. To support the project activity a special lab named “Software Development Lab.” has been introduced from this semester. And also to help improve the programming proficiency of the fourth semester students, a new laboratory named “C-Skill Development Lab.” has been introduced. As part of this laboratory, the students not only learn the fundamental and advanced aspects of C-programming, but are also encouraged to learn Professional coding standards and documentation which is the basic requirement of today’s IT industry. Thus our students stand out distinctly in terms of their skill sets, learning abilities and professional ethics and are extremely competent. This fact is very much evident from the fact that this year we have about 36 out of the 38 eligible students from our department are already placed in the campus interview.
Support for Higher Studies
The department encourages the students to take up higher studies after their graduation. As a supporting endeavor the department has procured study material for GATE, CAT and GMAT exams and also provided supporting study materials like question papers, preparatory notes on the departmental forum website. The departmental website forum provides a platform the students and the staff to interact outside the class room and get their doubts cleared. All the lecture notes, laboratory journal formats, question banks and last four year question papers are made available for the students to download and make use.
Achievements of the Department
The department has fame of winning Overall Championship for two consecutive years in Avalanche a National Level Student Tech Fest held at GIT every year. Our students have an outstanding caliber, which is manifested in their achievements. Several of our students have won first prizes in Technical Paper Contest, Skill Tests, Sports held at other engineering colleges. Several of our final year projects are sponsored by Karantaka State Council for Science and Technology(KSCST). Our students also take up industry sponsored project and have successfully completed the projects offered by Vayavya Labs, Belgaum and MindTree Consultants Bangalore to name a few. We have a vibrant Student Association named ISEA under which several extra and co-curricular activities are organized to improve the overall personality of our students. All the events are planned and organized by the students themselves under the expert guidance of the faculty. Few of the events organized include, C-Skill Test, Aptitude Test, English Proficiency Test, Mock Recruitment Test, Group discussion. And in sports, games like Volley ball, Mixed Cricked and Chess are conducted. Our department alumni occupying very high positions in the leading IT companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, MindTree, PSPL, Tech. Mahindra etc. is a testimony to the key role played by our department in shaping up the carrier of the aspiring engineers and thus contribute towards making India an IT super power.
